Dear Deb,

My Brother’s wife recently passed away. One of your last ‘Dear Deb’s,’ cautioned making ‘major’ money decisions during emotional times. When is it appropriate to approach financial topics with someone grieving?

- Gary, Del Mar

Dear Gary,
I am sorry to hear of your Brother and your recent loss! There is no ‘right’ time to approach some grieving; however, being supportive and attentive during this time can be motivating
to someone dealing with a loss. I recommend to start small in your communications and really listen to responses. We all experience grief and mourn differently but our finances should not be left out of focus. Be aware that there may be time- sensitive deadlines, changes to income needs or goals, etc. in regards to a loved one’s passing.

If you need help facilitating a conversation with someone who you care about, please contact my office at 858.756.0004!

Dear Deb,

My husband and I have recently separated.

Who is able to make changes to our Retirement and Trust Accounts?

- Maria, Rancho Santa Fe

Dear Deb,
My dear friend recently lost her husband. He was in charge of their finances and she is lost.

What financial topics need to be prioritized?

- Ellen, Rancho Santa Fe

Dear Deb,
I’m 62 years old and retiring next year. I don’t need social security for income when I retire.
I have longevity in my family.

When do you suggest I should start to take social security?

- Melinda
